Abstract ARTISTS bear the brunt of almost all attacks on artists in general.
We get all the rude comments about "What is it?"
Or at least in that category!
Abstracts are judged harshly by those that want to recognize something
or see patterns or shapes as something that they recognize.
I recently had an accomplished artist and the owner of a gallery explain his abstracts
in a context of how the images look like "things".
I listened, and was polite
and honestly wanted to react honestly and tell him that it was not necessary to
see a "rabbit" or a "frog"
or the silhouette of a face,
unless that was his intent all along.
I find it a bit humorous when people tell me that they see things in my work.
"Oh, I see the skeleton here" or
"Yes - I get it - that is a sunset and those are the mountains in the distance"
I try not to laugh.
But I usually say something like.
It is important for you to see figures or shapes that you recognize, isn't it?
And leave it at that.
After all.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
And ART is too.
