Working with Black in Painting

I see so many painters stay away from black.
I see the fear of the depth of it
and wonder why it intimidates so many ARTISTS.

I see Black as a Rare tool.
It is a layer that brings darkness
or accentuates lightness.

Black in a final layer helps to crush
too light of a spirit in a piece.

It brings a grounded approach and
demands attention.

I find my self reaching for it
when  piece just does not pull together.
I want to be more figurative with it.
I want to play with it without reserve.
I want to do outlines
and define shapes with it.
But instead
it can become a messy smear
across a canvas that is just not
doing what I need.

I love black as a
frame of work.
I love to paint my edges black
and let the piece emerge
from within.

I even enjoy an occasional black canvas.
I enjoy the pull of a piece from the inside out.
I enjoy reaching into darkness
and just pulling color our of it.
But it is much more challenging to do it.
